Happy Hallowe'en!!

Image
Happy Hallowe'en!! Today's blog is going to be short, sweet and full of pictures - I have worn myself out with all my Hallowe'en prep. I've had some great fun today, including an interlude at my mum's house to decorate spooky gingerbreadmen with my favourite shark experts. I've been melting chocolate, making spooky chocs with jelly surprises, sewing my plastic pollution outfit, pumpkin carving... all things Hallowe'eny! It's been almost plastic free, the chocolate came wrapped in plastic and the sweets had some plastic packaging. But all things considered, that is still drastically less than if I'd have just bought some Haribo mini bags. And mine is now in spooky shapes. I have definitely learned from my experience and plan to use it next year. It's mostly don't leave it all until the day before , as I ran out of time to do the gingerbread house - but hey! Christmas is coming. Anyway, I am done rambling. Here is a photo journey of ...

Final Friday Top Five!

Image
Top Five Water Pokémon So this month's is just a little bit of fun. I've been playing a lot of FireRed and I have Pokémon on the brain, a little bit. I always liked the water- and electric-type ones best, so I thought I'd figure out my top five. Without further ado: 5. Magikarp Now, I hear your cries: Why not Gyarados? Well, I had to copy paste the spelling of it for one. And well, Gyarados is the one everyone likes. Yes, it is badass but I just prefer Magikarp. Magikarp is my spirit animal. Spirit Pokémon? Anyway, it's this useless little fish which has the potential to be a major badass with love and encouragement. Something I think if true of all people, not just me. I just also feel like a flailing fish a lot of the time too! 4. Slowking "I could use pants." Best line from Pokémon 2000 . There is a literal YouTube video to back me up. 3. Totodile Totodile is on this list for family reasons. ...

Recycla-cools: EcoBricks

Image
You know how you see something once and then several times over that day you see that same thing over and over? Well, that happened to me recently. I was scrolling through Instagram and someone mentioned EcoBricks . It came up a couple more times and then my co-worker messaged me, asking about them! It was a sign from the universe, my next post was going to be about EcoBricks after doing some much needed research. EcoBrick wall. Photo from cobute 🌍 WHAT IS AN ECOBRICK?!  I think the website puts it best: An EcoBrick is a reusable building block created by packing clean and dry used plastic into a plastic bottle to a set density. Essentially, plastic bottles are stuffed with non-recyclable plastics to create a sturdy building block with almost limitless uses. Much like the water bottle houses I covered recently. EcoBrick is a global organisation which is trying to give our essentially value-less trash value. By packing it into a bottle, it has been removed fr...

Ancient Seas #6

Image
Liyvatan or Leviathan Melvelli Artistic Rendering from Scary Nature's YouTube Kingdom: Animalia Class: Mammalia Conservation Status: Extinct (EX) Found: Peru Era: Miocene Lived: 11-12 million years ago Diet: Smaller whales Weight: 57 tonnes* Size: 13.5 - 17.5m (44 - 57ft)* Habitat: Unknown *These are estimates, without living specimens or more remains it is nearly impossible to know. The leviathan melvelli or Livyatan was a toothed whale which lived around 12 million years ago during the Miocene era. It is the largest known extinct whale, which grew up to 17.5m (57ft). This is still smaller than the Blue Whale which lives today but it would have ruled the seas all those years ago, with evidence of it being a fierce hunter. Its remains were found in Peru, an area which would have been under the sea at the time making it rife with marine fossils. Colossal teeth had been found in 2008, but it wasn't until 2010 when more of this whale w...

Merfolk #3

Image
Much like with my last Merfolk, there was a lot of information on this one. There is not enough paper in the world to cover everything! And this is the first one who is actually alive as well... But anyway. Merfolk #3! David Attenborough Photo from the BBC Lives: London, England Era: 20th Century/Present Day Born: 8th May 1926 Occupation: Broadcaster, Naturalist David Attenborough has a TV career spanning seven decades and his documentary Blue Planet II (2017) was a catalyst for many in plastic pollution awareness and wanting to do something about it. Over the ninety years he has been alive, he has become synonymous with nature documentaries and promoting conservation.  His fascination with nature started at a young age. He grew up on the University College of Leicester campus, where his father worked as the principal. From a young age he was collecting fossils, stones and specimens of nature - his own little "museum", as it were. He even supp...

Marine Creature of the Month October

Image
In a blog slot later than usual, it is time for Marine Creature of the Month! This one was inspired by an episode from the O series of Qi , Ocean, where I honestly would have scored all the points. One of the questions was about this particular creature and I knew the answer (if you ignore the fact I refered to it by its Pokémon counterpart!). Naturally, I wanted to learn more about this weird and wonderful creature, so without further waffle, here we are! Sunfish, Mola Mola Photo from Apex Predators Kingdom: Animalia Class: Actinopterygii Conservation Status: VU (Vulnerable) Found: Across the globe Diet: Jellyfish, small fish, larvae, squid Weight: Between 247 - 1,000kg (545 - 2,205lbs) Size: Up to 3.2m (10.5ft) Habitat: Tropical, temperate waters; pelagic water. Can I just start by saying, isn't nature wonderful?! Look at that shape! This fish does not look like it could possibly exist, let alone function and survive, yet here it is. One of...
