Marine Creature of the Month Famous Fish: Jaws Poster from arthipo Great White Shark   As March is my Birthday Month (yes, I milk it for that long) I thought it was high time I covered the OG Famous Fish on #MCotM.  Photo from Oceana Kingdom: Animalia Class: Chrondrichthyes Conservation Status: Vulnerable WHAT IS JAWS? Thanks to the 1975 blockbuster, Jaws , the great white shark is possibly one of the most famous sharks swimming about in the ocean. It belongs to the Mackerel Shark family, which also contains basking sharks, goblin sharks, and thresher sharks. Great whites are known for their size, being among the biggest sharks alive today. Females are larger than the males, averaging at 4m (13ft) for the males and 4.9m (16ft) for the females. Certain specimens have been known to grow as large as 6m (20ft), like the one living off the coast of Mexico known as Deep Blue .  Like all sharks, great white skeletons are made out of ca...

Final Friday Top Five - Dylan's Pick

Image
Today it is Dylan's 9th Birthday! So to celebrate, I decided to let him pick this month's Final Friday Top Five. He wanted to go for his Top Five... Photo from WildAid Sharks! Honestly, we are not surprised. So here are Dylan's top five sharks, with a couple of facts to go with them. 5. Mako Shark Photo from Discovery Why does Dylan like them? Because they are super fast and cool! The shortfin mako can reach speeds of at least 31 mph. Male and female mako sharks avoid each other until they are ready to reproduce, so that the females do not get harassed. 4. Great White Shark Photo from Oceana Why does Dylan like them? Because they are really big and have awesome, sharp teeth. Great whites are the largest predatory fish on the planet. They have 300 triangular teeth, which are all sharp and arranged in up to seven rows! This creates the conveyor belt effect when they lose a tooth, it just gets replaced by one behind. ...

Sharks @ 7 & 3/4 Episode 8: Shark Facts

Image
For this video, I decided to do something a little bit different. I left my favourite shark experts a mission. My partner and I have an aquarium. It's a small affair with five fish and two shrimp inside. But my partner, being who he is, wants to make something a little more epic. So we are currently in the process of building an aquarium which will feature a land mass, a waterfall, a cave, some dinosaurs, and, of course, some sharks.  This is where the mission comes in. I want to know the sharks in my tank a little better. So their mission: Find out four facts about each shark and film their findings.  Here is what they got! I just want to point out, they researched and filmed everything. (And still did a better job than me, their sister with a media degree!) Do you know any facts about these four sharks? Share below!

Final Friday Top Five!

When I started this blog, one of the first things I said was that I am a massive shark nerd. Now, I haven't really done much to show this - plushies, bling and tattoos aside. So I thought this top five could be dedicated to my top five sharks. As most of the reasons are "I think sharks are 😍😍", I will include a fact on them too. Top Five Sharks 5. Black Tip Reef Shark Photo from Monterey Bay Aquarium It would be a little weird if I didn't include the shark I have permenanty inked on my skin in the top five. I just think these sharks are iconic; they are your typical shark shape, but they have the black tips to make them just that little bit different and recognisable. I'm fairly certain we had a toy one when I was a child; so the love must have started at an early age! These sharks are sleek, nocturnal, and curious things - known for stealing spears from fishermen! Fact: Their iconic black tip is part of their camouflage.  4. Goblin S...
