Earth Day 2020

Happy Earth Day! This is my third year celebrating Earth Day and this year marks the 50th anniversary . As we are still on lockdown and to keep you lovely people safe, this year we have done litter picks in isolation. I want say a huge thank you to everyone who took part and thank you for all the great pictures. Hopefully, next year we will be able to celebrate together. For now, enjoy the pictures. TEAM JET WASHERS Thank you Carole, Tori, Arthur, and Jet Wash WiggleBum. TEAM HOLLAND Thank you Sue. TEAM MOLOCK Weirdest find: Definitely the pants and jacket which were in the river. Honestly thought I was about to discover a dead body! I love doing the Earth Day litter picks, despite it being somewhat bittersweet. It's a great opportunity to come together and do some good for the environment, but it's sad that we have to do it in the first place. Still, it was good fun and the perfect excuse to ...

Earth Day 2019

HAPPY EARTH DAY! I hope your day was nice and Earthy yesterday. Myself, I organised a litter pick. My initial plan was to go to the beach, like last year. However, it was Bank Holiday Monday yesterday and travelling to the beach would have been hellish, let alone actually being there. So I shifted my focus to something a little more local. I am very lucky in that the Shropshire Union Canal runs along the edge of my town. It's a gorgeous area which I have walked and run many times. I have even braved cycling along it, constantly fearing falling in of course. As a lot of my family live locally, I put up an event on Facebook and left it open for them to join if they wanted. Everyone was eager join. And my step dad even volunteered their canoe and kayak! All in all, shaping up to be a good day. We met at the stretch of the canal behind the cricket club and used my parents' house as a base camp. Sun screen applied, hats and sunnies on, canoe and kayak prepped; we were r...

Problematic Plastic

Image
This post has been a long time coming for me. It has even taken me three days to write it. I wasn't sure how to approach my own plastic comsumption, let alone blog about reducing it. This post has been pushed back and back and back... My beautiful handwriting But I guess the reason why  I was having such trouble is because plastic is just so problematic . It's everywhere! So much of my life seemingly depends on the substance suffocating our planet. Grappling with this warrants blogging about, so I am diving in. Problematic Plastic will no doubt become an on-going series as I figure out how to undo nearly thirty years of bad habits. It's all part of the journey. My starting point was the Earth Day Plastic Pollution Primer , which was both inspiring and a little infuriating. It pushes the core message: Reduce, Refuse, Reuse, Recycle, Remove . All good, these are all things I can do. Reading further it even has a plastic calculator to figure out how much you use...

Earth Day Part Three: The Action

Photo: The Telegraph Happy Earth Day Everyone!   (Yes, I realise it was yesterday, but humour me.) If you follow my Instagram , I'm sure you'll have seen I had something of a productive day. Well, here is all the behind the scenes gossip, my what went wells, what I'm going to do next time (yes, next time) and some of the weirder things we picked up. The Beach: Colwyn Bay, Wales. MORNING We started early, aimed to get to Colwyn Bay for about 10am. Through some miracle, we kept to that plan. I'm normally half an hour after the time I guestimate we should be at places for. It's an easy drive though: up to Chester, across to Wales. Literally two roads. And with my sea-themed CD, it felt like no time at all. Parking was a little problematic, there were roadworks happening where the internet said the car park was. But with it being Sunday, we found somewhere better and free. Getting to the promenade and beach was simple, we were at the seafro...

Earth Day, Part Two: The Plan

April 22nd. It's fast approaching. In my research for what I can do I found a number of organisations which have scheduled beach cleans. Fantastic news! Between Surfers Against Sweage , The National Trust , The Marine Conservation Society and 2 Minute Beach Clean I could find an event near me on the 22nd. Nope. Most of them are happening today. Or a couple weeks ago. Or not until September. Just my luck. I mentioned I was a landlocked mermaid, right? But, there are alternatives. Surfers Against Sewage offer a step-by-step guide to hosting your own beach clean, including all the legal stuff and who to contact for permission. Now, I realised I have left this a little late. To make all the necesary arrangements and drum up enough people to come, it would take more than a week. But it is something I definitely want to do; it'd be a great learning experience and a great way to do something for the environment. So what can I do now? What can I do in a week? ...
