Today it is Dylan's 9th Birthday! So to celebrate, I decided to let him pick this month's Final Friday Top Five. He wanted to go for his Top Five...

Sharks!

Honestly, we are not surprised. So here are Dylan's top five sharks, with a couple of facts to go with them.

5. Mako Shark

Why does Dylan like them? Because they are super fast and cool!
  • The shortfin mako can reach speeds of at least 31 mph.
  • Male and female mako sharks avoid each other until they are ready to reproduce, so that the females do not get harassed.

4. Great White Shark

Why does Dylan like them? Because they are really big and have awesome, sharp teeth.
  • Great whites are the largest predatory fish on the planet.
  • They have 300 triangular teeth, which are all sharp and arranged in up to seven rows! This creates the conveyor belt effect when they lose a tooth, it just gets replaced by one behind.

3. White Tip Reef Shark

Why does Dylan like them? Because they look really cool.
  • White tips are nocturnal; they rest during the day and come out to play at night.
  • They are viviparous, which means during gestation the embryo feeds on a yolk-sac and then a placenta before a live pup is born.

2. Tiger Sharks

Why does Dylan like them? Because they look awesome and will eat literally anything.
  • Tiger sharks are not related to sand tiger sharks; they are of two different shark families. Sand tiger sharks are more closely related to great whites than to tiger sharks.
  • Like birds, tiger sharks migrate south for the winter. It is believed they are following their dinner.
Honourable Mentions:
Sand Tiger Shark
Black Tip Reef Shark

Are we surprised? No. But why does Dylan like them? They, of course, look really cool and can survive in freshwater as well as salt water. He also tells me that they can survive up to 1m away from the shore. They are also considered the most dangerous living shark. But he also assures me that sharks are not inherently dangerous, only when provoked. (I didn't need to find bull shark facts, as Dylan gave me enough!)

So there are Dylan's favourite five sharks. What are yours? Lemme know below.

And one more time:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DYLAN!
